Quilting Machines

Any sewing machine can be used to piece together the quilt top. Some standard sewing machines may be used to sew the top, back and batting together. Some of the standard sewing machines may require a few adaptations to sew the quilt together.

 The Quilting Machine

A quilter, someone who does more quilting than regular sewing, probably prefers a machine designed for quilting for the following reasons:

  1. They have extra room to the right of the needle, for sewing on top of the quilt.
  2. They have a higher than normal rise for the pressure foot
  3. They may have depending on the machine some extra stitch patterns that quilters like to use.
  4. Some also have automatic stitch length for free motion quilting.
